Positron or PET emission tomography is a non-invasive test that creates a nuclear image of any part of the body such as the lung or heart. For this purpose, a radioactive tracer, also known as radionuclides, is injected into the blood. 


Once the follow-up mixes with the blood it is taken to the muscles and into the organ like the heart. The scan determines whether the heart is healthy or not by showing blood flow.

The basic steps of PET scanning:

-Once inside the body the tracking produces gamma energy rays.


-The beams are collected by a detector that surrounds the body and then it is sent to a computer. The system converts the signals into clear images.


-The full picture is made by connecting pictures of thin heart slices. Each slice is photographed from different directions and angles to produce a holistic and three-dimensional image.


A doctor can determine heart function using the image. If the muscles are strong the follow-up is taken excellently. 


On the other hand, if the heart is no longer viable or has dead cells the follow-up is not taken. In PET scanning the level of absorption of the trace is perceived as different colours or degrees of brightness.


The need for a PET test:

PET scan procedure:

An MRI scan of a pet can be performed at a hospital or diagnostic laboratory. It is edited by a nuclear medicine technician and a doctor using a PET machine. First electrodes or small metal disks are placed on the arms of the patient's legs and chest. 


The electrodes are then connected to the device using wires. These are designed to monitor and record the patient's heart rate called an electrocardiogram. The ECG also indicates when the scan should be performed.


The next step is to create a base image of the organ. This is done without the addition of surveillance and takes about half an hour. 


After scanning the baseline, the material is injected through an intravenous line that has been glued to the person's arm. 


After inserting the tracer the patient lies flat on a table that slides into the scanning device with a look similar to a massive doughnut.


The scan begins when the detectors pick up the signals provided by the tracker. The data is converted to a digital image using a computer. 


One image is an accumulation of many photographs taken from all angles and slices. The whole procedure can take between an hour and three hours. 


It is essential to be completely still during the entire scanning process or that the images come out blurry.


Steps to follow after PET scan:

Because scanning is a non-invasive process the person can return to regular activity immediately after its completion. It is recommended to drink plenty of fluids the next day. 


Water makes it possible to flush out all the radioactive material, that is, the trace element from the body. Also, make an appointment with the doctor regarding the follow-up of the test results.


Risks associated with PET:

PET scanning is usually especially safe for any person. The amount of radiation to which the body is exposed is very small. Therefore the kidneys can remove it from the body for a maximum of 24 hours. The test is not recommended if the person is:


-pregnant

-Nursing mother


In both cases, the scan may harm the child.
