 Looking Beyond the Most Common Application of PET Scan

PET scanning technology is often used to detect the presence of a brain tumour. But there is more to the tool than just cancer recognition. It can be used for:

-Internal vulnerability

-Brain haemorrhage

-Infection detection

-Structural disorders within the skull

Although a powerful invention the device has limitations which means that sometimes a brain tumour test includes a pet scan.

 In such circumstances, other medical examinations such as X-rays for final diagnosis are performed. But for this article, we focus only on scanning technologies.

The two broad types of brain:

When they are loosely categorized, there are only two types of technologies that the brain can be scanned using:

-Computed tomography (CT)

-Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

Within these two classes, there are many variations. Each type is applied to identify and diagnose a different type of medical problem for which the device is operated depending on the patient's symptoms.

6 types of brain imaging tools:

Every brain imaging technique has the same goal - to look for problems that occur in a patient's brain or to observe its activity. There are currently six most common methods for performing the process.

-A CT scan takes an X-ray to create a brain image. The actual device is a cylindrical device on which a sliding table is placed. The patient lies on the table while an X-ray source moves in a semicircle around the human head. 

The source is inside a pipe. The image is created based on differential absorption of the rays. As the beam passes through the brain it is absorbed at a different rate. 

While the bone is good at it, the air only takes a small amount of X-ray and soft tissue is placed on the median. As a result, CT scans are excellent at creating a contour image of the brain but do not fit the definition of its structure.

Functional activity test:

A) Functional magnetic resonance imaging is the method by which brain activity should be tested. The tool works by sensing the changes in:

-The level of oxygen in the blood

-Blood flow when neural activity occurs

-If the brain is active then there is more blood flow to it because it needs more significant amounts of oxygen at this point.

As a result, fMRI is perfect for creating activation maps that outline the brain regions employed for specific cognitive functions.

B) Positron emission tomography is another application that is activated to test brain activity. This technique uses a radioactive material. As the short-term material crumbles it produces positron.

 The PET scan brain-machine detects this element. The higher the radioactivity, the more the brain functions.

Checking electrical activity:

A) Magnetoencephalography is commonly used in clinics and studies, but they often help assist surgeons locate pathology. Surgeries use technology to find out what function each part of the brain performs and neurofeedback. 

To create an image the MEG machine uses a gadget called SQUIDs that measures the magnetic field generated by an electric motion in the brain.

B) Electroencephalography places an electrode on the patient's scalp and then uses them to create a map of mental electrical activity. The EEG monitors the electrical signals produced by the neurons in each brain.

 This is one of the technologies that is often applied because it is not particularly invasive and sensitive. The technique can even select a millisecond of cognitive activity. 

Moreover, it is one of the few procedures that have created a high temporal resolution i.e. accurate measurement concerning time.

-Near-infrared spectroscopy introduces infrared light into a service that falls on a spectrum of 700 to 900 nm. The light shines on the brain on one side and is measured as it rises from the other side.

 The level of oxygen in the blood present in the head defines the attenuation of light which is a measure of the level of brain activity. NIRS is therefore an optical technique for scanning the brain.

Necessity in scanning techniques:

Apart from the obvious need to identify cancer screening techniques that are beneficial for other diseases as well.

 Suppose a patient has been suffering from painful but intermittent headaches for some time. A physical examination fails to identify its source. Other medications and treatments do not cure pain.

A brain scan using one of the technologies explained above can identify the underlying problem. The brain image can help the doctor assess the cause of the headaches and thus help with the medication and its solution.
